FREE TAIL COVERAGE PROVISIONS IN NEW YORK
In order to qualify for 'free tail' coverage in New York, a doctor must either reach the age of 65 or older, have had a claims made policy for a minimum of five 'consecutive' years (all five years may not be with one company, but the company must be an admitted carrier) and completely retire from medicine;
OR a doctor must reach the age of 55 or older, have had a claims made policy for at least ten consecutive years and completely retire from medicine. In addition, 'free tail coverage' is provided if the policyholder were to die or become permanently disabled, preventing him/her from practicing medicine.
